Plan Mode

Plan mode is your narrative workbench. Here you build and reorganize your novel's structure before (and during) writing.

Structure Hierarchy

Your novel is organized into three levels:

Acts → Chapters → Scenes

An act is the largest division (e.g., setup, confrontation, resolution). Within each act you create chapters, and within each chapter you create scenes. Scenes are the writing units: each one is a block of text with its own content, synopsis, status, and statistics.

The header of each act shows a summary: number of chapters, number of scenes, and total word count.

Creating Elements

  • New act — Created from the main Plan area.
  • New chapter — "New chapter" button in the upper right corner of each act.
  • New scene — "+ New scene" button inside each chapter.

When creating an element, an inline field opens to type the name. Press Enter to confirm or Escape to cancel.

Renaming and Deleting

  • Rename — Double-click the name of any act, chapter, or scene.
  • Delete — Right-click to open the context menu and select "Delete." Confirmation is always required, showing how many child elements will be deleted.

WARNING

Deleting an act deletes all its chapters and scenes. Deleting a chapter deletes all its scenes. This action cannot be undone.

Drag and Drop

You can reorganize your novel by dragging elements:

  • Acts — Drag to change the order of acts.
  • Chapters — Drag a chapter to move it within the same act or to another act.
  • Scenes — Drag a scene to move it within the chapter or to another chapter.

Order changes are saved automatically.

Synopsis

Chapter Synopsis

Each chapter can have a synopsis: a brief summary of what happens in that chapter. Click the document icon next to the chapter name to expand/collapse the synopsis. Write and it saves automatically.

If you have AI configured, you can click the summary icon (next to the synopsis icon) to have the AI generate a synopsis based on the chapter's scene content.

Scene Synopsis

Each scene card has a space for a synopsis. Click "Add synopsis..." to write it. The synopsis is important because the AI uses it to generate the scene's content.

Chapter Subtitles

Chapters can have a subtitle (e.g., "One month earlier", "London, 1887"). The subtitle appears below the chapter name and is included in DOCX/PDF exports.

Scene Status

Each scene has a visual status indicating its progress:

  • 🟠 Draft — The scene is being written.
  • 🔵 In revision — The scene needs review or editing.
  • 🟢 Done — The scene is finished.

Click the status badge to cycle through states (Draft → In revision → Done → Draft).

Order Number

Each scene card shows a number in the upper right corner indicating its position within the chapter (1, 2, 3...). This number updates automatically when reordering.

Opening a Scene

Double-click any scene card to open it in the editor (Write mode). The app automatically switches to Write mode and loads that scene's content.
