AI Chat

Chat mode lets you have a free-form conversation with the AI about your novel. It's ideal for brainstorming, resolving plot questions, exploring character ideas, or asking for creative suggestions.

Accessing Chat

Click AI in the top bar or press Ctrl+4.

How It Works

The chat sends your message along with your novel's context (structure, Codex, scenes). The AI can thus give you answers that take your narrative universe into account.

Each conversation is organized into threads. You can create new threads for different topics and return to previous threads. When creating a new thread, the context resets.

Context Options

When chatting you can choose what context to send to the AI:

  • Outline — The complete structure (acts, chapters, scenes with synopses).
  • Current scene — The content of the scene you're editing.
  • Full text — The entire manuscript (consumes more tokens).

Context chips are shown visually next to the input field so you always know what information the AI receives.

Extract from Chat

When the AI generates useful content in the chat (a character description, a scene idea, a narrative beat), you can extract it directly:

Click the Extract button on any assistant message to:

  • Create Codex entry — Converts the text into a new entry (character, location, etc.).
  • Create scene — Creates a new scene with the text as content.
  • Copy as directive — Copies the text as a directive/beat for a scene.

This closes the loop between brainstorming and content without manual copy-pasting.

Response Formatting

AI responses are rendered with formatting: bold, italic, lists, code, quotes, and headings display correctly.
